My two cents worth: I find it hard very hard to decide, yet devote a fair bit of time trying to.
Generally I find comics fit into two categories, determined by the technique an artist uses.
- One group tries to give an artistic rendition of reality. The characters are drawn to scale, in anatomically correct proportion, displaying always a natural posture. The background, is typically given the same careful attention. Serpieri, Manara, Tarlazzi, Altuna belong to this group. Often their work comes across as restrained.
- The second group tries a different approach through a cartoon-like rendition. Here the attitude of the character is the most important element. Facial expressions, body gestures, proportions are all overemphasized (even distorted at the expense of reality) to convey a mood, feelings, emotions, or actions. An impossible long stride is used to indicate motion; a face practically explodes with anger; smile is often given full set of teeth … overacting is the rule. Van Gotha, Ferocious, Riverstone, Taylor, Noe, Solano Lopez even, all try to convey the essence of the character, rather than to stick with a realistic integrity.
Both types, however, work very hard to achieve perfect beauty. And I end up flip-flopping between them. I love Drunna and Selen, and of course Jill, not to mention Twenty, and not to forget Tamara … see what I mean? If anybody can do black beauty better than Taylor, I have not seen it. Sure he has issue with size, but I think it is, in part at least, an emotional size, an allusion to the drive and desire behind it. It is hard to think of something else when the penis is in control, right?

It’s funny, but most of the artits do the same body changing only the face. Only Serpieri draw diferent women. The rest only change the hair color or face, but the body is just the same.
